At the Birofilia 2010 Festival, Dorota Chrapek’s beer, brewed in the Belgian Pale Ale style, beat 174 competitors (prepared, in a vast majority, by men) entered in the Home-Brewed Beers Competition. This was a historical moment as, for the first time in history, the Home-Brewed Beers Competition was won by a woman. The jury comprising international experts and brewers, chaired by Doctor Andrzej Sadownik, had no doubts as concerned the champion brew. The prize involved brewing the Grand Champion on an industrial scale at Bracki Browar Zamkowy (Brotherly Castle Brewery) in Cieszyn. Dorota Chrapek comes from Pogwizdów near Cieszyn, and lives only 5 kilometres away from the brewery.
Belgian Pale Ale is the Brabant-Antwerp everyday beer of amber-coppery colour. The malt scent includes mostly biscuits and croutons, with undertones of fruit, hop and spices. The taste is composed of fruity (orange, pear) and slightly spicy flavours, followed by malt and phenolic undertones. Bitterness: low to medium. Carbon dioxide saturation: medium. Brewed from Pilsner malt with the addition of Vienna or Munich one. Hopped with English varieties. Fermented in temperatures below 20 °C with strains of top fermentation able to create moderate quantities of phenolic compounds as a by-product.
