Dorota Chrapek’s beer brewed in Belgian Pale Ale style defeated 174 competitors (in great majority brewed by men) entered for the Contest of Home Made Beers. The jury made up of international experts and brewing masters including Ralf Münch, Bruce Awford and Dr Ian Hornsey, chaired by Dr Andrzej Sadownik, had no doubts as to which beer deserved this title. This is not Dorota Chrapek’s first success; she was a winner of one of the six categories in last year’s Contest of Home Made Beers. She is the top prize winner this year.
To enter the contest, Ms Chrapek brewed only 19 litres of the future Grand Champion in her kitchen. Now she will be able to brew much more of it – the author may brew the winning home made beer on an industrial scale in Brackie Castle Brewery in Cieszyn. The process is scheduled to start soon. Grand Champion 2010 – as Grand Champion 2009 - will be on sales on Santa Claus Day, 6 December.
“I am very surprised to be the winner. Competition was really fierce. Belgian Pale Ale is not popular in Poland as a beer style, but I hope that after 6 December, as soon as the beer is available in the shops, this style will gain more popularity”, said Dorota Chrapek.
The Birofilia Festival attracted a few thousand participants to Żywiec who for two days enjoyed numerous attractions of the largest beer feast in this part of Europe. Beer fans from all over the world, to name just a few from the Netherlands, Serbia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, the UK, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Russia or even Greece or Spain, arrived at the brewery in the Żywiec Region.
The Alley “Beers of the World” was opened for the first time at the Birofilia Festival. The participants of the Festival had the opportunity to sample over 100 beers from various parts of our globe, home made beers and craft beers alike. This is an exceptional event because until now it has never been possible in Poland anywhere to sample such a wide selection of beers in so many styles. The Alley attracted so much interest that almost all beers of the world were sold. Visitors could get to Żywiec by train – the historic “Train to Żywiec” with a steam engine. During the two days, over 2000 people visited the Żywiec Brewery Museum. This year, the festival site was twice as large and divided into two zones: the beer zone and entertainment zone. The over one hundred-year-old malt roaster was one of the many attractions. All those who took part in the Malt Roasting Demo for Żywiec Porter could see that the roaster still works perfectly.
The next Birofilia Festival will be held in 2011, as usually at the third weekend of June and in Żywiec.
