More than two hundred delicacies, proposed by few dozen brewers not only from Poland but from abroad as well, entered the list against each other in the Home Brew Competition at Birofilia Festival 2011. Finally the jury chaired (traditionally) by Andrew Sadownik, PhD, awarded a cologne beer of Jan Szała the title of Grand Champion. Thereby, the author of the formula became the youngest honored brewer in the history of the Festival. Like every year, the winning beer will be brewed in industrial scale in Bracki Browar Zamkowy in Cieszyn. Beer comes into shops on the sixth of December.
Cologne beer comes from the Rhenish Cologny. Extremely light and clear – among its representatives are the lightest beers from top fermentation. It was created to compete with pils which at the beginning of XX century conquered continental Europe. In its taste it is mild and refreshing with delicate fruit aroma and fruit flavor at the beginning of its flavor pallet and also slightly herbal and acid later on. It owes everything to soft local water, regional yeast strains, coming from deep attenuation of a barrel ( apparent attenuation until 85% !), and use of moderate amounts of noble, aromatic varieties of hops.
